Apple Mail Junk Mail Filtering

IMPORTANT: This documentation is for training Apple Mail to filter junk mail. Documentation for a different email client can be found at Configure my email software.

Configure and train your Apple Mail Junk Mail Filter

Configure Junk Mail Filter

Apple Mail's Junk Mail settings are located on the Toolbar under Mail, then Preferences, and then Junk Mail . The default settings are to leave junk mail marked in the inbox for training purposes. You can also customize your junk mail settings by clicking advanced. You can train Apple Mail's Junk Mail filter by individually selecting certain Email as you receive them in your inbox. To select an email, click on the icon Junk Mail in the toolbar.

Train your Junk Mail Filter

In the screenshot above there are three options for When junk mail arrives. While you're training your Junk Mail Filter you should leave it set to "Leave it in my Inbox, but indicate it is junk mail (Training)". If you find something in your inbox that should be marked as Junk Mail, control click (ctrl + mouse click) on the message and mark As Junk Mail. An example is shown in the screenshot below.

Junk Mail Folder

If you want to have Junk Mail transferred to the Junk Mail Folder go to Mail in the top left corner of the toolbar and then select Preferences. Make sure your settings match the screenshot below.

You must check the junk folder frequently throughout the day to check for legitimate messages.  If you find something that was marked As Junk Mail, and it should not be, control click (ctrl + mouse click) on the message and mark As Not Junk Mail.
